Lighting design is a growing profession whose practitioners are getting more and more requested all over the world. They plan, design, and execute lighting projects in interiors, such as small rooms and intimate locales, as well as on exteriors, such as huge parks and buildings. Lighting design requires planning and specialized skills.

This is an education where light, space, and the human being is in focus. It will prepare you for this new and exciting profession by combining everything that schools and work places can offer in order to give you — the future lighting designer — a solid foundation to build on.

The lighting design education is run by Sverigefinska folkhögskolan (Svefi) in Haparanda, Sweden.

Last day for application: June 14, 2009

Notes about the education

Studies will focus on lighting, lighting theory and interior- and exterior lighting design, but they will also consist of electrical theory, graphic design, audio technique, and promotion/marketing. This is mixed with practical lighting in various areas. The entire educational process is based on creative and artistic thinking. About a third of the entire education will go into two periods of Learning at work, "LIA". During these periods you will work with assignments at various companies and, at the same time, learn more about the lighting business in general.

The education is sorted into the following moments:

  ● Lights and People
● Perceptions, lights and space
● Techniques
● Learning at work (LIA 1*)
● Design and visualization
● Complex lighting design projects
● Marketing and promotion
● Learning at work, including examination projects (LIA2*)

* LIA = Lärande i arbetet, or "Learning at work".
It is an integral part of the Advanced Vocational Education and Training. Read more about it here.

When your studies are complete, including two periods of LIA, and once your examination project has been approved, you will be given an advanced vocational education degree for lighting design.
