1. HOW DO I APPLY TO THE LIGHTING DESIGN EDUCATION? [Top]

Print out and fill in the application form. It's available as a Microsoft Word .doc document (click here) or as an Adobe Acrobat .pdf document (click here). You can also order a form by calling +46(0)922 688 00.

Your application must be in the mail on April 14, 2009, at the latest. But before you put it in the mail you need to make sure that you've included the following:

Proof that you've completed a secondary education (or a non-Swedish equivalent thereof).

A copy of your academic grades.

A list of your earlier educations (post-secondary only).

A list your earlier work experience, if any.

A personal letter. Tell us about yourself and why you want to study lighting design.

When you're certain you've included all that along with your application, mail it to:

  Svefi
Box 154

A number of applicants will be contacted for an interview, whereupon the accepted applicants will be notified.

2. WHAT IS LIGHTING DESIGN? [Top]

Lighting design blends technical skill with artistic expression. It is the discipline of illuminating areas and objects, not just to make them visible in fitting and thought provoking ways, but also to bring out and enhance what qualities are already there.

There is a growing interest in, and understanding of, the meaning of light in a populated environment. Lighting design as a trade and a profession has come to mean more and more throughout the world: most architectural and constructional projects today also include lighting design.

Lighting design is creative at its core and involves working with, and within, the entire planning process, in interiors as well as on exteriors. There are growing possibilities for work with lighting consultants, construction consultants, architects, the lighting industry, the trading industry, and in other areas of design.

In order to meet the growing need for lighting designers with practical know-how we now offer you Sweden's only advanced vocational education in lighting design.

3. WHAT IS AN "ADVANCED VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING" (AVET)? [Top]

The AVET is a post-secondary education that started as a pilot project in 1996. In 2002 it became part of the Swedish educational system. The AVET is based on close cooperation between employers and educators, and is meant to directly and viably meet the labour market's needs. Employers are deeply involved in shaping the educational process as well as in practical teaching on the work site for the Lärande i arbetet ("Learning at work"), or LIA, part of the training.

Read more about AVET at www.ky.se (Swedish) or by clicking here (English, .pdf document).

4. HOW LONG WILL THE EDUCATION TAKE? [Top]

The lighting design education is two years (worth 80 KY/AVET-points).

5. WHAT DOES THE EDUCATION CONSIST OF? [Top]

Studies will focus on lighting, lighting theory and interior- and exterior lighting design, but they will also consist of electrical theory, graphic design, audio technique, and promotion/marketing. This is mixed with practical lighting in various areas. The entire educational process is based on creative and artistic thinking. About a third of the entire education will go into two periods of Learning at work, "LIA". During these periods you will work with assignments at various companies and, at the same time, learn more about the lighting business in general.

The moments are sorted into the following categories:

    Lights and People

    Perceptions, lights and space

    Techniques

    Learning at work (LIA 1)

    Design and visualization

    Complex lighting design projects

    Marketing and promotion

Learning at work, including examination projects (LIA2)

When your studies are complete, including two periods of LIA, and once your examination project has been approved, you will be given an advanced vocational education degree for lighting design.
