Foreign students at Swedish folk high schools

Foreign students are warmly welcomed at Swedish folk high schools. While many courses are taught in Swedish, you also have the possibility to study Swedish at the schools. (It's safe to say that most of your teachers and fellow students also know English to at least some degree.)

A short presentation  of  Svefi

The tradition of liberal adult education in Sweden is a longstanding one. It began as early as 1868 when the first folk high schools were founded. Today there are about 140 folk high schools in Sweden. They are run by various organisations and associations, as well as by municipal authorities.

Svefi was founded in 1973 and was then run by The National Association for Finns in Sweden. The school is situated in Haparanda on the Finnish - Swedish border. The area is bilingual, which makes it possible to communicate both in Swedish and in Finnish.

The school's goal is to give its students an opportunity to study and increase their knowledge in different subjects in order to develop themselves. They are also able to qualify to study at the university. The education is given in Swedish and sometimes in Finnish.

Through its teachings methods, the school endeavours to encourage its students in their personal development and ability of co-operate. For that reason studies are often carried out through teamwork in projects and other kind of group tasks. Another important goal is also to strive for the integration of the school in society, both in theory and in practice. Important parts of the courses offered are educational visits and travels.

The students' personal development is the focal point and, though some parts are pre-determined, the students are provided with considerable freedom to accommodate the education according to their personal preferences. Creative and artistic thinking are important components and permeate all classes and subjects at Svefi.

There are many courses to choose from, varying from two-day courses to those that last several years. The minimum age for admission to the folk high school is 18 years. Some special courses, such as music education, sound engineering, light design, interior design, art course and Performance Art have specific requirements for admission.

The classes are taught in Swedish. There are Swedish courses running parallel with the education which are open for the foreign student to attend.

Our school also offers vocational training in co-operation with the local job centre. The target groups for these courses includes unemployed with short vocational training and need for further education.  

Svefi also has a long experience of distance courses and administrates a distance network called Nätbildarna which includes other folk high schools as partners.

Other important work our school is involved in includes various projects and conferences. This aspect of our work has grown every year and gives us as an education institution an opportunity to participate in development of society and develop international  contacts.  During the past ten years or more Svefi has been participating in various international projects funded by EU-program LLL (long life learning). Finland, Barents region and especially the north-western part of Russia has also grown to be a natural international contact for Svefi Academy. Today we also have project partners in Ukraine and Belorussia.  

The school has a staff of 30 persons, natives from e.g. Sweden, Finland and Russia and some teachers who work only part time. Approximately 80-90 students attend the school each year and tuition is free.

Svefi is run by a non-profit association "The Association for Svefi in Haparanda" and the persons who are members of the board represent Svefi, Haparanda town, the Central Association for Finns in Sweden, Finland Society in Helsinki and Friends of Svefi - a non-profit association.

Courses at Svefi

Our educations are called "courses". Each course usually lasts two years or more.

 

 

General course

The general course is the base of educations/courses at folk high schools in Sweden. Usually a general course lasts for two or three years depending on the learner's earlier studies, on which you can get competence for further studies up to university level. The compulsory subjects are Swedish, English, mathematics, history, civics and science. 

At Svefi you can also choose to study e.g. music, sound engineering, art, or interior design along with the general subjects. You choose 50% of general subjects and 50% of the others. You also have the possibility to choose other optional subjects.

The general course is also adjusted to visually impaired persons. We have educational aids and equipment to support their studies.

 

 

Special course for visually impaired persons

The goal of this course is to give visually impaired persons means to start an independent life on their own. Participants can choose among different the subjects, e.g.:

  • Activities of daily living (ADL)
  • Braille
  • Different equipment, aid
  • Internet radio
  • General subjects
  • Music, etc.

 

 

Art courses

Art courses at Svefi are one- or three-year-long educations which contain mainly visual arts and design and give the students basic knowledge in different forms of art. The classes, mostly practical but also theoretical, are supervised by professional artists and designers. Students also participate in various productions together with the students of Performance Art, music, lighting design, interior design and sound engineer courses. Exhibitions are carried through continuously and a final public exhibition is arranged at the end of the school year. This course is a good platform for further studies or future work within art and design.

The students can develop their skills e.g. in:

  • Painting
  • Sketching
  • Graphic art
  • Installations
  • Video and film editing
  • Photographing
  • Sculpture

The students also have a possibility to choose other optional subjects and art course can be combined with the general course.

 

 

Interior design

Interior design course is a two-year-long education which gives the students basic knowledge to be able to work as an interior decorator or an entrepreneur; it can also be combined with the general course. The classes, mostly practical but also theoretical, are supervised by professional artists and designers/decorators. Students participate in various productions together with the students of Performance Art, art and lighting design. They also can as an examination re-design private persons' rooms or public premises.

The students can develop their skills e.g. in:

  • Textiles
  • Lighting design
  • Histories of art, design and furniture

The students also have a possibility to choose other optional subjects.

 

 

Lighting Design

Lighting design is creative at its core and involves working with, and within, the entire planning process, in interiors as well as on exteriors. There are growing possibilities for work with lighting consultants, construction consultants, architects, the lighting industry, the trading industry and in other design areas.

The lighting design education at Svefi is two years long. Studies will focus on lighting, lighting theory and interior- and exterior lighting design, but they will also consist of electrical theory, graphic design, audio technique, and promotion/marketing. This is mixed with practical lighting in various areas. The entire educational process is based on creative and artistic thinking.

The studies are sorted into categories such as:

Music

The music course at Svefi is a one- or two-year-long education for those who want to work on fundamental parts of their music knowledge such as:

  • Ensemble playing
  • (Primary and secondary) instrument technique, playing styles, improvisation and interpretation
  • Music theory
  • Ear training
  • Digital music production and recording
  • C hoir singing
  • Genre cognizance

The education is not tied to one specific genre, but encompasses theoretical as well as practical aspects of most musical styles, such as rock, pop, jazz, folk, blues, country, classical, metal, hip hop etc. Concerts of many kinds are frequent, as are recordings in Svefi's professional studio. Both of these events are realized in co-operation with the sound engineering students at  Svefi.

 

 

Performance Art

Performance Art is a one- or two-year-long multi-artistic education, the only one of its kind in Sweden - focusing on performance art and body expression. The course is partly set in an international environment tutored by professional artists from different countries (Willem Wilhelmus, Roi Vaara, Anna Berndtson, Bob Connolly). Performance art unites several forms of art (visual art, dance, theatre, music) into one total experience. Students often work together with the other aesthetic courses at Svefi like music, art, lighting design, interior design and sound engineering.

The students can develop their skills e.g. in:

  • Visual arts
  • Physical improvisation
  • Creative writing
  • Sound  and lighting technique
  • Video and film editing

The students also have a possibility to choose other optional subjects.

 

 

Redesign

Redesign is a one- or two-year-long education and its goal is to inspire the students to take care of things that have been thrown away or are not used anymore and give them new life by reusing them. The goal is also to make the students be conscious of our environment and start thinking in an ecological way.  The students also have a possibility to choose other optional subjects or combine their studies with the general course. They also work closely together with other courses at Svefi.

 

 

Singer/Songwriter

The singer/songwriter course at Svefi is a one- or two-year-long education for those who want to work on their songwriting skills, their vocal technique, timbre and interpretation, as well as on fundamental parts of their music knowledge, such as:

  • Singing with an ensemble
  • Piano and/or guitar technique, playing styles, improvisation and interpretation
  • Music theory
  • Ear training
  • Digital music production and recording
  • Choir singing
  • Genre cognizance

The education is not tied to one specific genre, but encompasses theoretical as well as practical aspects of most musical styles, such as rock, pop, jazz, folk, blues, country, classical, metal, hip hop etc. The students' songwriting skills are, naturally, a major part of the education. These are honed by composing, arranging and analyzing songs in different styles. Concerts of many kinds, where students get the chance to perform their own music both as a solo artist and with a band, are frequent, as are recordings in Svefi's professional studio. Both of these events are realized in co-operation with the sound engineering students at Svefi.

 

 

Singing

The singing course at Svefi is a one- or two-year-long education for those who want to work on their vocal technique, timbre and interpretation as well as on fundamental parts of their music knowledge, such as:

  • Singing with an ensemble
  • Piano and/or guitar technique, playing styles, improvisation and interpretation
  • Music theory
  • Ear training
  • Digital music production and recording
  • Choir singing
  • Genre cognizance

The education is not tied to one specific genre, but encompasses theoretical as well as practical aspects of most musical styles, such as rock, pop, jazz, folk, blues, country, classical, metal, hip hop etc. Concerts of many kinds are frequent, as are recordings in Svefi's professional studio. Both of these events are realized in co-operation with the sound engineering students at Svefi.

 

 

Sound engineering

A sound engineer's work is varying; some work with TV and radio productions, some with theater or concerts and of course those who work with recording all kind of music which we can experience in our everyday life. 

The sound engineering course is a one- or two-year-long education for those who want to develop their fundamental skills in:

  • Digital music production and recording
  • PA-system
  • Microphones
  • Mixing- and listening technique
  • Acoustics
  • Computer music
  • Music theory
  • Electricity
  • Genre cognizance

Concerts of many kinds are frequent and are realized, just like the studio recordings, in co-operation with the music course students at Svefi.  Professional producers and sound engineers visit the course frequently.

The sound engineering course is also adjusted to visually impaired persons. On this course participants use technics, equipment and literature that are adjusted to visually impaired persons to support their studies.  

 

 

Studio Musician

The studio musician course at Svefi is a one- or two-year-long education for those who want to work with studio recordings as well as on fundamental parts of their music knowledge such as:

  • Ensemble playing
  • (Primary and secondary) instrument technique, playing styles, improvisation and interpretation
  • Music theory
  • Ear training
  • Digital music production and recording
  • Choir singing
  • Genre cognizance

The education is not tied to one specific genre, but encompasses theoretical as well as practical aspects of most musical styles, such as rock, pop, jazz, folk, blues, country, classical, metal, hip hop etc. The weekly studio sessions consist of many different kinds of projects, such as one-by-one and live tracking, jingle writing, sessions with and without producer and so on. An annual two-week session lays the foundation for a CD that documents the year's recordings. Concerts of many kinds are frequent and are realized, just like the studio recordings, in co-operation with the sound engineering students at Svefi.
